The First Epoch, that of Shadows, saw the first of men band together and build. Before these times it is said men were savage and remembered nothing. Legends tell that the first gods taught found man and man convinced the gods to teach man the secrets of fire, construction, and most importantly magic.

In reality it was the gods that made races at their whims, crafting them as vanity. Each of these gods provided for their creations and protected them, teaching them and pitting them against each other. There were a thousand races of creatures each made by a god or groups of gods. Those that the gods disfavoured were left to rot, becoming little more than beasts. Those that thrived continued to become stronger.

It is legend that the first foundations of the city of Rivershear were laid in the First Epoch though since the city has been built over and over on top of itself finding those original foundations would be almost impossible.
