When the gods came together to create magic they agreed one of their number would stand aside and not contribute their power. This god would stand as an arbiter of order and ensure that the cycle of death would continue as best as possible. Knowing that they were giving up so much of their power the compromise was that their chosen children would be freed from the cycle of death and remain immortal. It is said that Death was witness to the greatest acts of the Shards, never intervening when they made mistakes. Because they never gave up anything of themselves they also were not consumed by the Wyld and they were either unwilling or unable to stop Kontaro from unleashing the Night of Fire.
