When I look deeply into the cosmos, or into the cracks between incantations, and even into the shadows of the evening fire I can see it. It is a nothing that hungers, it is a nothing that hates. It infects the corpses with undeath and tries to tear into life. I shall control this power.

What is the Void?
The void existed when the first spark split. It was there when gods were born and when they made the world and life itself. It has always existed and will always exist. There is fierce debate in the deep halls of the universities of Rivershear if the void has an ego, or thought, or if it is just a force, but all agree that it is the antithesis of life itself. The void manifests itself in a myriad of ways but the most visible is that of the undead.
The first undead
In one of the worst and bloodiest battles between rival gods one of the first and mightiest dragons fell. Instead of death coming to it though to the gods horror it rose again filled with the void and a kind of undeath. Each god tried to fell it but they found their power useless against it. The undead dragon fled to the north and waited though now whenever there was life, undeath could bloom.
Weapons to face undeath
The gods came together to forge a power that could face the void manifest and agreed to each give up some of themselves to be wielded by their children. They called this power magic and it spread across the realm. Magic could end undeath and with magic permeating the earth it meant that even the common mortal could fight back. This act though weakened every god greatly.
In darkest hour our truest patrons gave. The sea of elements made intangible and tappable. May the void never touch that which they wrought.

The return of the dragon and the night of fire
When Kontaro unleashed the night of fire and cracked the durance, he also unbalanced the sea of magic. This allowed the dragon to take flight and lay waste to whole cities. They rose again in undeath, led by intelligent undead. Civilizations were isolated and continents broken apart with these massive blooms. It is said that Kontaro rode his own dragon to face his mistake and both he and the undead dragon were destroyed together.
