Magic is a sea of power. Elements made intangible and manipulatable for shards and mortals alike to harness. Where magic crashes in waves those elements can gain form and grow. We call them elementals, but little is known yet what exactly makes them form, when they grow, and what happens if they reach a critical mass. The smallest of them, known as slivers, are hardly a threat and tend to be left alone by most travellers. In some cases larger elementals, sparks or bursts, start to pose a threat to even armed patrols. Rumours of massive elementals in particularly magically rich areas abound, but without credible reports. The larger the elemental the greater chance that when they are killed a raw component of the elemental magic is dropped.
